Academic Excellence In Middle School

Dr. Darnell Johnson

Dr. Darnell Johnson Middle School Academic Scholar Award is a vital part of the Foundation’s work, shining a spotlight on promising young men at a crucial stage. Established in 2016 in partnership with Chesapeake Public Schools, this award recognizes outstanding African American male students from each Chesapeake middle school. It’s designed to celebrate their academic success, determination, leadership potential, growth, and commitment to learning, often despite obstacles. The goal is powerful: to encourage these students to become ambassadors for high academic achievement and successfully prepare for high school. Presented annually at the Foundation’s Black Male Achievement and Scholarship Breakfast, this award also honors the legacy of Dr. Darnell Johnson, an educator who lived by the advice, “GET AN EDUCATION” and “HANDLE YOUR BUSINESS”. This program is fully supported and funded by his widow, Dr. Stephanie D. B. Johnson.
