Investing in Futures: Why Supporting Young Black Men in Education Matters

Education is a cornerstone of a thriving community and a powerful catalyst for individual success. Yet, ensuring equitable access and supportive learning environments for all students requires a dedicated and diverse body of educators. Today, we face a critical shortage of teachers nationwide, with an even more pronounced underrepresentation of Black men in the teaching profession. This challenge directly impacts our students and underscores the vital mission of organizations like The New Chesapeake Men For Progress Education Foundation.

The National Landscape: A Shortage of Educators

Recent data paints a concerning picture of our education system. Across the United States, schools are grappling with significant teacher shortages. Reports indicate that approximately 1 in 8 teaching positions nationally were either unfilled or filled by educators who were not fully certified for their roles (Learning Policy Institute). Furthermore, a staggering 86% of school districts report struggling to hire qualified educators (College Transitions).

This shortage is driven by a confluence of factors, including demanding working conditions, inadequate support, and compensation that often lags behind other professions requiring similar levels of education. The consequences are far-reaching, impacting student achievement, increasing the burden on existing teachers, and hindering school improvement efforts.

A Deeper Divide: The Scarcity of Black Male Educators

Within this broader challenge lies a more specific and urgent concern: the profound lack of Black teachers, particularly Black men. While students of color constitute more than half of the public school population, only about 7% of public school teachers are Black (National Center for Educational Statistics/College Board). The statistics for Black male teachers are even more alarming, with Black men comprising a mere 1.3% of the teaching workforce in the 2020-2021 school year – a decline from previous years (USAFacts).

This disparity means that many Black students, and particularly Black male students, can navigate their entire K-12 education without encountering a teacher who shares their racial or gender identity. In fact, an estimated 40% of schools in the U.S. have no teachers of color on staff at all (College Board).

The Undeniable Impact of Representation and Mentorship

The presence of Black teachers in the classroom is not merely symbolic; it has a tangible and profoundly positive impact on student outcomes. Research consistently demonstrates that:

  • Black students who have at least one Black teacher are 13% more likely to graduate from high school and 19% more likely to enroll in college (College Board).
  • For Black boys from low-income backgrounds, having two Black teachers between the 3rd and 5th grades increases their likelihood of graduating high school by nearly 40% (College Board).
  • Exposure to a Black teacher in elementary school has been shown to reduce high school dropout rates for Black students by as much as 39% (Gershenson et al., cited by College Board). 

These outcomes highlight the critical role Black educators play in fostering academic achievement, aspiration, and a sense of belonging for students.

Here in Chesapeake, The New Chesapeake Men For Progress Education Foundation is dedicated to addressing these challenges by investing in the educational pursuits of young Black men. For 15 years, our foundation, the philanthropic arm of New Chesapeake Men for Progress, has been committed to “improving the quality of life in the community” through educational programs, services, scholarships, and mentoring.

We are proud to have:

  • Awarded over $229,000 in scholarships, empowering more than 250 students from Chesapeake Public Schools to pursue higher education.
  • Provided vital support to local Title I schools and various mentoring programs and youth initiatives.
  • Expanded our scholarship program in 2024 to include students pursuing education in vital trades and the arts, recognizing diverse pathways to success.

Our motto, “Progress is not an accident. It is an attitude,” reflects our proactive approach to creating opportunities and fostering success for the young men in our community.
