More Than Scholarships: Building Futures Through Mentorship and Guidance!

You know The New Chesapeake Men for Progress Education Foundation is big on scholarships – and yes, we are! We’ve recognized hundreds of high school graduates and provided substantial financial aid to help them pursue higher education. But our commitment to the youth of Chesapeake goes even deeper. A core part of our mission is providing mentoring and other educational programs to support young people in our community.
Why is this so important? Because shaping strong futures takes more than just financial aid. It takes guidance, support, and positive role models.
Here’s how the Foundation champions mentorship and guidance:
- Direct Engagement: We provide guidance and mentoring directly to middle and high school students as a proud partner with Chesapeake Public Schools.
- Supporting Partners: We distribute annual educational grants and mini-grants to support valuable mentoring programs and initiatives serving Chesapeake youth. This includes support for organizations like Ground Zero Development, Inc., Chesapeake Juvenile Service Education Program, Boys and Girl Club, and Chesapeake Center for Student Success.
- Targeted Programs: In partnership with the Chesapeake Redevelopment and Housing Authority (CRHA), we established a Leadership Development Mentoring Program specifically for students residing in public housing or utilizing Housing Choice Vouchers.
- Building on a Legacy: Our work continues the legacy of individuals recognized for their commitment to mentoring, like Dr. William E. Ward, one of our founders, and reflects the wisdom of figures like George W. McCadden, Sr., known for laying “bricks of mentoring”. The Bronze Eagle Award even recognizes individuals and organizations for their generous contributions to advancing mentoring services for Black males.
- Historical Impact: Our efforts in youth development actually predated the Foundation itself, with initiatives like the Black Male Development Conferences that served hundreds of youth and parents.
Since 2009, the Foundation has dedicated over $264,950.00 to impact the lives of many youth, with support going towards not just scholarships and school supplies, but also mentoring programs.
When you support the Foundation, you’re helping us build strong children, not just through financial aid, but through the vital power of mentorship and guidance.
